Peace.
What does this word mean to you? Does it bring up any specific feelings? Do you think about peaceful moments in your life? Or maybe moments where you wished for peace more than anything else in the world? What is it about this word that gives us a ray of hope in times of trouble or it helps us release the air in our lungs that we didn’t even realize we were holding in?
Peace is defined as, “freedom from disturbance; tranquility, a state or period in which there is no war, or a war has ended.”
So, I must ask you. Have you ever truly felt or lived in complete peace?
Our Current State
Without a doubt, as human beings on this planet, we can all attest to how the year 2020 has been far from peaceful. Throughout the world, there are constant and ongoing diseases, famines, and wars, as well as death, mourning, hate, evil, sin. But haven’t these things always existed? History shows us that this has been the reality for as long as history has been recorded.
This beautiful world, which God created to dwell with us, was corrupted at the very start of His work with the first man. So how do we get back to that intended peaceful paradise where our Creator longs for us to dwell with Him forever?
Sometimes I feel lost in my thoughts, impatient with living in a world that feels like it’s getting worse day by day. But some positive thoughts about what’s to come also make their way into my mind. Unlike the current state of things, I often imagine and dream of a world of peace. A world that could be. A world that will be. Because God promised it in the Bible.
God’s Promise of Peace for Us
Can you also imagine a world with no violence? Hold onto that. Can you envision all human beings from all walks of life loving and caring for one another? Hold onto that. It can be hard to see the light when it feels like the world is crumbling down around us. But what if we’ve been looking at it from the wrong perspective? What if the things that are falling apart and shattering around us are making way for something new, something better?
I believe it is hope for the future and faith in God’s word that should keep moving us forward during these dark times. We must believe in God’s promises and know that peace will come because God always keeps His word. John 14:29 says that God has told us what will take place, so that when it does happen, we will believe. So don’t let your own expectations of the future or even what you see right in front of you now overpower what God has actually promised. There’s no need to speculate what’s to come, because God has already shown it to us:
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. He will wipe every tear from their eyes There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:1-4
Remember that saying, “Life is hard, but God is good?” Yes, it may be cheesy, but it can also be a reminder to us all. We may not have peace at this moment but take a deep breath. Release. Hope. Believe.
Our peace is coming, because our God always keeps His word and His promise.
