The Water of Life

Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

John 4:13-14

I’m not sure about you, but I love the sound of rain (and thunder). It’s so peaceful and relaxing to me. Everything needs water: plants, animals, and people. In the Bible, God says His Word is water in Deuteronomy 32:2,

water of life, God's word

“May my teaching drop as the rain,
my speech distill as the dew,
like gentle rain upon the tender grass,
and like showers upon the herb.”

As the rain gives water and life to the earth, likewise, God’s Word gives our spirits life. We are God’s “earth” that needs His “rain” daily. God’s Word is life as it says in John 1:4,

In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”

This is not a coincidence. God himself is the source of life because he created the whole universe and all that lives in it (Genesis 1, Hebrews 3:4). When we are physically thirsty, we drink nice, refreshing water.

When you drink soda, juice, or anything that isn’t water, it may quench your thirst for a while, but you’ll soon feel thirsty again. It is the same spiritually. There are many different religions, and even within each religion there are many different denominations. While all claim to be “good” and “right”, why are there so many?

If all religions are true and have the answer, then there wouldn’t be thousands of different religions and even more groups within each religion all claiming to have the answer to salvation? Someone thinks their way is “better”, so they split and form their own group and that goes on and on and on, and people keep searching for the right spiritual “drink”.

water of life, God's word

When we are spiritually thirsty, we should come to the source of all life – God. In Jeremiah 2:13, God calls Himself the fountain of living waters, but the next lines talk about how God’s people have forsaken Him as the true source of life and have dug and made their own bowls that don’t hold water because they are broken.

If we are likened to “bowls,” then the words and teachings we have are like the “water” that fills us. When we turn away from God’s Word, the spiritual water of life, our spirits thirst and die – just like our physical bodies when we don’t drink physical water for a long time.  Our “bowls” become “cracked,” meaning our minds and spirits become weak and we follow whatever sounds “good” or “right”, but have no root in those words. We end up damaging ourselves even more.

So what can be done? How can this issue be resolved?

water of life, God's word

Thankfully, God has a plan to bring His people, us, back – to mend our broken bowls. He made it known by sending his son, Jesus Christ. Jesus came so that all who thirst for true water – true teaching – may never thirst again and have eternal life (John 4:13-14).

Dear readers, I pray you examine your source of water and that you come to the true source found within God’s Word.

Peace.
