The Book of Titus is a three-chapter epistle written to Titus, whom Paul left on the island of Crete to appoint church elders in every town. Paul gives Titus instructions, including what kind of people are fit to be elders.
An Overview of the Book of Titus
In chapter one, Paul explains that an elder, must be blameless–not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, violence, or pursuing dishonest gain. An elder should be hospitable, loving what is good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold to the truth of the word, able to encourage others and refute those who oppose. Even at that time, there were already rebellious people who tried to deceive other believers through lies and ‘Jewish myths,’ such as the teaching that a believer had to be circumcised (Acts 15, Romans 2:25-29). Through their actions, one could see that they denied God while claiming to know him.

Next, more instructions are given to believers–to the older men, younger men, older women, and younger women. All of these instructions are to teach the people to live godly lives all in all. They are also to teach them to say ‘no’ to worldly passions while they await the return of Jesus Christ. Nothing the believers do should lead anyone to despise them.
In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us.
Titus 2:7-8
What should our mindset be?
Finally, believers must do what is good. All of us were foolish, disobedient, and deceived by passions and pleasures–living in malice, envy, and hating each other. In fact, aren’t we still this way? We fall short. Paul wouldn’t have reminded the people that they shouldn’t do anything that leads anyone to despise them if it wasn’t something we were all still working on.

Through Jesus, we can be saved. He was merciful when we had done nothing to deserve it. So what should be our attitude? We should do our best to become the kind of person who is wise, obedient, loving, and constantly does good.
…And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.
Titus 3:8
