If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty, give him water to drink.
Proverbs 25:21
While it’s important to take care of the physical needs of people–even our enemies–you may be surprised to hear that there’s more to this proverb of King Solomon.
Food in the Bible
It’s not a stretch to say that food is likened to God’s word within the Bible. Jesus calls himself the bread of life (John 6:35), the one with the water of life (John 4:14), and he also refers to himself as a bridegroom that, when he is with his guests, eats and does not fast (Matthew 9:15).
While Jesus performed miraculous things like multiplying bread and fish, we see that the true food he gave was the food for the spirit, the Word of God.
“I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, yet they died. But here is the bread that comes down from heaven, which anyone may eat and not die.
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. This bread is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
John 6:48-51
Everyone Gets a Chance to Eat God’s Food
So what is this Proverb saying? We should be giving the word of God to everyone – even to our enemies. Jesus also gave the word to those who were under Satan, even to those who put him on the cross, in the hopes that they too would come to repentance. To reach salvation.
Today too, there are believers and non-believers. People who know about the Bible and people who don’t. And among them, there’s no enemy who shouldn’t have a chance to receive the word of God if they are hungry for it. Because when we think about it, our true enemy isn’t people–it’s Satan who corrupted this world (Ephesians 6:12).
This is the way to care for the needy–even more than offering physical food. To give the gift of life through God’s word. But to be able to give this, we must first have it ourselves.
The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you–they are full of the Spirit and life.
John 6:63
Take some time to think today if you have an abundance of spiritual food that you can share, or if you need to be eating more yourself. Let’s make sure to be well-fed, so that when we meet someone who does need a little extra food, friend or enemy, we’ll be able to share generously.
