“Make me know your ways, O Lord; Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”
Psalms 25:4-5
When I read these verses, I am reminded of my own past. I thought I knew God and His word. I thought I was on God’s path to salvation, but it turned out that I was actually lost although I didn’t know it at the time.
Questions that Led Me Away from the Church
Even though I had grown up going to church, I never really understood why I believed in God or the Bible. As I grew older and into my college years, I studied more about the Bible and still regularly attended church. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to actually believe the words that I was saying during the services.
I got frustrated with not understanding the Bible and pretending to believe, so I eventually left church and religion altogether for a time. However, I didn’t like that feeling either because it felt empty, so I looked for something I could try to believe in and understand. I ended up practicing Buddhism (as best as I understood it) and it kept me satisfied for some time.
Later, I began working as an English teacher in Korea and met someone who I became great friends with. He was a Christian and had invited me to his church. I was reluctant to go for a long time, but eventually I went. There was something different about this church. And from then on I was in that church every Sunday for service.
God, Who Led Me Back to Him
My friend then asked me if I wanted to study the Bible on an even deeper level, and I did. As I learned more about the Bible there, it seemed so different than before. I could begin to clearly understand it in a way I never could as a child or young adult. I began to develop new faith, and really believe in God and the Bible.
The study course I went through, my friend and my teachers, all went to my current church, Shincheonji (New Heaven and New Earth). I joined this church because here, I could really understand God according to the Bible, and could learn about and truly believe in His Word and the fulfillment of His promises.
As I look back on the events and people who have been in my life until now, I can clearly see it all wasn’t by chance. God had been looking out for me from the very beginning to lead me back to Him.
This Psalms passage reminds me of who God really is and what He wants for us. I highly encourage you to read this Psalms passage once again. Reflect on it and ask yourself if you truly know God’s ways. Are you led by God’s truth? If not, He’s giving you the opportunity to seek Him through His word. God is calling you back to know His truth and be led in His ways. Take some time today to earnestly seek God through the Bible. And if you need any help, we’re always here for you.
In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.
