“God is love” is a phrase we often hear in our churches, from our pastors or our Christian family members or friends. It’s true; God is love, but what does that truly mean? We often think that God’s love is always kind, always accepting, always soft. Like no matter what we do (as believers) God will always forgive everything we do. Yet, when we look in the Bible, is that truly the case? God’s love can also be seen as tough love in many cases.

In the Bible, the book of Ruth is one that’s often overlooked by many people. If you have read it, you know it’s not very long – having only four chapters and less than 90 verses. Yet it’s a story that is very significant for us today. Ruth was a woman of love, faithfulness, and obedience. Let’s take a closer look at her story and how we can still learn from it today.

“The simple believes everything,
but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”
Proverbs 14:15
What does it mean to be “prudent”? Being prudent is to be thoughtful and discerning…to not be hasty. Prudent people think about the possible consequences of their decisions before making them. We often show this quality when deciding which university to attend, or who we want to marry, or even the type of job we want. There are plenty of important decisions we give thought to before making them. But what does it mean to be prudent in the Bible?

Praise and worship is a large, central part of any church service. From traditional hymns to more contemporary worship songs, many Christians love to sing songs to worship God. Whether they are traditional songs or newer ones, they all contain some beautiful melodies and lyrics. Have you ever been moved emotionally by a praise song? Maybe you’ve cried, raised your hands, or lifted up a desperate prayer.

We’re always told to forgive people when they’ve wronged us. And ultimately, we should forgive them. But is there a limit for forgiveness? What if, after being forgiven, someone commits that same wrong again?
Think about ex-convicts out on parole. They’ve been released from prison on the trust of the state authorities that they won’t commit any more crimes. What good is that freedom for ex-cons if they break the law again and end back up in prison? They’re given freedom (“forgiven”) with a condition. That condition is to live a new life apart from crime.

The thoughts of the righteous are just;
the counsel of the wicked is deceitful.
Proverbs 12:5
The “thoughts of the righteous” and the “counsel of the wicked” bring to my mind the image of a just and fair king who has a corrupt advisor. An example that immediately comes to my mind is from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There is King Theoden of Rohan and his wicked, greedy advisor, Wormtongue. Wormtongue lied to the king and subtly influenced the king through his deceiful counsel when the king was making decisions. This wicked advisor wanted to undermine the king’s authority and take the kingdom for his true master, an evil and cruel leader.

“Make me know your ways, O Lord; Lead me in your truth and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation; for you I wait all the day long.”
Psalms 25:4-5
When I read these verses, I am reminded of my own past. I thought I knew God and His word. I thought I was on God’s path to salvation, but it turned out that I was actually lost although I didn’t know it at the time.

“A gentle tongue is a tree of life,
but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.”
Proverbs 15:4
A “tree of life” most likely makes you think of the Garden of Eden. But what does it mean that a gentle tongue is a “tree of life?”
Our words can hurt, or they can heal. They can build others up, or tear them down. I’m sure you’ve been hurt by what someone has said at some point in your life. And maybe you have even hurt others with your own words. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ve been encouraged by others’ words and you have encouraged others also.

If you grew up in the United States and are old enough to remember the ‘90s, then you may recall a show named, “Touched by an Angel.” It was a popular Christian family drama that ran from the mid-‘90s to the early 2000s.
The concept of “guardian angel” is a popular belief in many Christian communities. And this TV show used that idea for their basic plotline. If you’re not familiar with the show, it centers around three angels (disguised as normal people) who help others during difficult times in their lives. The main character of each episode doesn’t realize they had been touched or helped by an angel until the end of each episode when the angels reveal themselves to be messengers sent by God.
