What is Trust?

Trust – it’s one of the most complicated things in the world when it comes to human relationships. This value is something built over time, it’s the foundation of human interaction. One wrong move and that trust you built with someone is broken and changed forever. Cheating, lying, and breaking promises are all key components to breaking your trust with someone. Does this sound familiar? Think about our relationship with God.

From the time of Adam, up until now, God’s chosen people have constantly broken their covenants (promises) with God and cheated on him with other gods repeatedly. In other words, God’s people strayed and gave their sacrifices and hearts to other gods. Yet each time His people betrayed, they were given more chances to fix what they had broken, but they never did. Yet in Revelation, God creates a new thing, a New Heaven and New Earth that become the people that will never betray Him and will live eternally by His side (Rv 21). So if we are living in a time when we have the chance to be trusted by God and become His people, then it’s important to ask why should we trust God?

A better question; why shouldn’t we trust Him?

1. Our God is an Honest God

God is not human, that he should lie, not a human being, that he should change his mind.

Does he speak and then not act? Does he promise and not fulfill?

Numbers 23:19

The very foundation of trust is honesty. Honesty is how you grow trust. Being truthful and keeping those promises. God is one of the clearest examples of this. He is pure good, and knows no evil. He is so pure that he cannot even exist in the same place as Satan, which is why when Adam’s Generation sinned, God had to leave the world. (Gn 6:5-6) But, luckily, his goal is to return and reconnect with the creation he lost. (Learn more about sin here)

Since we know that God does not sin or lie, so we can understand that all he writes in the Bible is the truth. God is honest to His people when they betray him and he judges them, and he is honest in all the prophecies (promises) he made throughout the Bible. He speaks to make promises, and then later he fulfills these promises through a promised pastor like Jesus, or the one who overcomes in Revelation.

We should remember God’s honesty and consider how this applies to us as believers today. There is an entire book of the Bible that is a prophecy for Jesus’ second coming. God’s promises are the truth and will be fulfilled. It’s only a matter of when they will be fulfilled. So, it’s important we look for signs like in Matthew 24. (Check out our Re:Connect Podcast Livestream about the signs of the end of the age)

2. Our God is a Reliable God

I have told you now before it happens so that when it does happen you will believe.

John 14:29

Why do Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God? Because, in his life, he fulfilled the prophecies about the son of God. He was born of a virgin, came out of Egypt and was sacrificed, and much much more. Even in his final breath, he fulfilled all the Old Testament prophecies (Jn 19:30)

For example, Psalms 78:1-2 says that he will speak in parables to keep what he was saying hidden. This is fulfilled in Mt 13 as Jesus speaks about the kingdom of heaven in parables.

Jesus spoke all these things to the crowd in parables; he did not say anything to them without using a parable. So was fulfilled what was spoken through the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter things hidden since the creation of the world.”

Mt 13:34-35

Why didn’t many people listen and believe Jesus at this time? They were stuck in the past; they were so hyper-focused on the Law of Moses that they couldn’t recognize the fulfillment taking place before them.

But what about the New Testament? There are plenty of things promised throughout the New Testament, specifically Revelation which talks about Jesus’ second coming and the one who overcomes and a New Heaven and New Earth. It can feel overwhelming, and it can be discouraging if you don’t know where to start looking. But it is all in the Bible, you just need direction. These events are unfolding before our eyes, so it’s very important that you can recognize the fulfillment so we don’t end up like those who didn’t trust and believe in Jesus.

3. The Word of God is Truth

Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

John 17:17

In John 17, Jesus is praying for the disciples. He is praying for God to sanctify them because they have God’s word and belong to God. Jesus says that they no longer belong to the world, this is because they have an understanding of what Jesus testified, that is, the true word of God.

Later in verses 20-23 Jesus prays “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

What does Jesus mean by being brought to complete unity? To become one with Jesus and God. This is God’s will that Jesus is praying for; that believers who seek God may find the Word and understand and become one in God and Jesus. God wants to reconnect with His people and live eternally like in Rv 21.

Everything in the Bible will be fulfilled because God has promised it. We already have countless examples throughout the Old Testament fulfillment. We have this proof so we can trust in God’s promises in the New Testament. So, it is important to emphasize that what is written in the Bible is the truth because it is God’s word and because God always fulfills what He has written in the Bible. 4. Our God is a Hopeful God

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah 29:11

Hope is the keyword here. What fuels humans more than hope? In the world you and I live in today, it’s something I think we could all use more of. (Read more about encouraging bible verses here) It’s comforting to know that God has a plan for us and our future, and it’s by no mistake that you are here reading our blog at this time. He leads each of our paths and shows us the narrow path towards salvation (Mt 7:13-14) and it’s our job to keep on that path and follow it.

God wants us to dwell with Him, but in order for us to have the eternal paradise with Him that is promised, we must learn the word of truth and have an understanding. God is on our side and as long as we remain in Him, His word will also remain in us (Jn 15:7), but we must have the proper understanding in order for us to truly remain in God.

5. The promise of Revelation

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Revelation 21:3-4

I know this verse itself doesn’t have the word ‘trust’ in it. But this verse offers both the ultimate goal of believers and of God; eternal life together. And this is what we, as believers, must trust in. So let’s apply what we learned earlier to this verse.

We know that since all scripture is God-breathed, this promise in Revelation will happen and will be fulfilled. Additionally, we know that because God keeps all his promises, and as long as we are those who understand and live by God’s word, we will be those who can have hope in this verse. We will be God’s people, and He will be our God. He will wipe our tears and protect us from all the bad and evil Satan brought into our world. Death, illness, and pain; all gone. Can you even imagine? (Read more about who can enter heaven here)

The first step you need to take is here (1:1 Bible Study). We know that what is written in the Bible will be fulfilled, so we cannot be complacent, we must learn the word now before it’s too late like those at the time of Jesus’ first coming.
