“He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
Revelation 21:4
God will wipe away all of our tears. Hopefully this gives you hope and comfort. Especially considering the way the world is now, with wars, death, and suffering at every turn. Is this a world that we want to live in and are content with the way it is? For certain, it’s not for me. I’m pretty sure, none of us are content with the current state of the world. But, although we may be in the midst of endless miseries, please take heart. Because God promised a time when all of those things would come to an end. He made a promise to wipe the tears from our eyes, to create a world where there would be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.
With that hope in mind, let us talk a little more about the origin of suffering, when it will end, and what no more pain or death will mean for you, me, and the whole world.
WHERE DOES SUFFERING COME FROM?
Put simply, suffering and death exist because sin exists. And sin exists because of the devil and his work to separate people from God. Sin and suffering were never God’s intention for this world He created. God worked to create a beautiful and perfect world where He could dwell with and amongst His creation. But because of greed and deception, God’s greatest creation, people, turned their backs on God and instead chose to listen to the devil and his lies.
Because of that, sin entered the world and has affected humanity ever since. Sin separates us from our Holy Father because holiness and sin cannot mix. Holiness will wipe out sin, so God had to leave His creation in order to protect it. But because He was disconnected from people, the sin within them, within us, eventually kills us. (Romans 6:23)
WHEN WILL GOD WIPE AWAY OUR TEARS?
In the meantime, due to sin, all creation has been in pain, waiting to be liberated from the bondage of death (Romans 8:20-21). Seeing us go through tremendous hardships, wouldn’t God our creator, suffer a much greater pain than us?
Thankfully, God didn’t just leave or abandon us. He has been planning and working for the past 6,000 years to reconnect with His precious creation and to dwell amongst them once again. And we see the culmination of that work and God’s promise to restore everything recorded in Revelation 21:1-6.
Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away…and I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God…He will wipe every tear from their eyes…He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”… “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End.”
We can see that God has promised to make everything new and to wipe away every tear from our eyes. Imagine that, a world where God is with His people. Also, a world without the source of sin, Satan. And if there is no sin, there is no death, no mourning, no suffering, no pain. Truly, it will be heaven.
WHAT WILL A WORLD WITH NO SORROW OR DEATH LOOK LIKE?
We see a further description of this new heaven and new earth in Revelation 22. We see the river of the water of life flowing through this place, we see the tree of life, once again bearing fruit, and nations being healed by the leaves of the tree of life. And although we might not know exactly what it will look like in reality since this is a promise of the future, we can focus on a keyword that is repeated throughout. Life. In this new heaven and new earth there will be life. God himself will be there, as well as Jesus, and those who are at this new heaven and new earth will dwell in that paradise together with God forever and ever. Eternal life. Once again, heaven.
There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign forever and ever.
Revelation 22:5
I know, it might sound too grand or intangible. But our God keeps His promises. He has fulfilled everything He said He would do. His track record is 100%. And a track record like that should give us hope. Hope in the world that God has promised to create. We just need to have faith in that promise and draw closer to God in the way He’s provided at this time: through His word.
Faith and Hope
My fellow believers, let us once again remember that God has promised to restore everything and live with us peacefully in the new heaven and new earth (Revelation 21:1-3). There will be no more war, pain, death, and most importantly, no more Satan, the source of sin. It will only be us and God forever. Therefore, when faced with grief or hardships, let us be reminded of the blessing that awaits us. Let us remain steadfast in our faith in God’s promises. The day is approaching when God will wipe away our tears and we will all be renewed and healed inwardly and outwardly.
