How to be a Good Christian Wife (Spiritually) – The Proverbs Series

How to be a Good Christian Wife

Ladies, take note. (Guys, don’t leave quite yet).

A lot of us are concerned with making our faith shine through our physical relationships. Whether it’s trying to be the kind of spouse God expects us to be, or looking for a godly partner, it’s a hot topic in many Christian circles today.

If you read through Proverbs 31, you’ll see a section on a wife of noble character. A woman that makes and sells clothing, gets up while it’s dark, plants a vineyard, and whose lamp doesn’t go out at night.

She sees that her trading is profitable, and her lamp does not go out at night.

Proverbs 31:18

Ah, so this is why I still haven’t found a husband! Time to buy a lamp, keep it on all night, and then tell the world on Instagram.

Not quite.

I’m sure you can gather that this is NOT what God intended. But do you know what it’s really saying?

Are You Quarrelsome in Your Life and Faith?

quarrelsome, life of faith, peace, knowing, understanding

Better to live on a corner of the roof than share a house with a quarrelsome wife.

Proverbs 21:9

Just at face value, this proverb has a lot of wisdom. Who wants to share a house or a room with someone who is always quarrelsome? Have you ever had to do that? When the person you’re living with stirs up trouble and there is always a tense atmosphere hanging in the air? This proverb should help us reflect on ourselves and how we share our space with those around us. We should be peaceful, not quarrelsome, lest we make the other person want to live on the corner of the roof just to get away from us.

But if we start to dig a little deeper, we can find a more spiritual meaning in this proverb as well. First, we have to consider a couple things: what do wives and husbands represent in the Bible, and what does the Bible say about the house where they’re living?

“One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor,
but the way of the wicked leads them astray.”

Have you ever counseled and guided someone before? It could be a friend, family member, or an acquaintance. Counseling is an important tool for helping others deal with all kinds of issues – finances, relationships, or other personal things. Counseling guides people to figure out the best way to resolve those issues that need addressing. It helps them get back to a sense of normalcy in life.

Get Wisdom, No Matter the Cost – The Proverbs Series

get wisdom, Bible, God, wisdom, seek

Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

Proverbs 4:7

Why does it cost everything we have to get wisdom and understanding of God? Are we supposed to go into debt enrolling in a theology school? Sell everything we have in order to understand God better?

Actually, the word of God should be given without cost (Isaiah 55:1-3, Revelation 22:17). Rich or poor, anyone who is thirsty for the word of God is able to receive it. So why does the Bible say it costs everything we have? In fact, there is a cost to receiving God’s word–we have to let go of something in order to receive and keep it.

Are You Prudent or Simple in Your Faith? – The Proverbs Series

prudent, simple, faith, God's Word

“The simple believes everything,
but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”

Proverbs 14:15

What does it mean to be “prudent”? Being prudent is to be thoughtful and discerning…to not be hasty. Prudent people think about the possible consequences of their decisions before making them. We often show this quality when deciding which university to attend, or who we want to marry, or even the type of job we want. There are plenty of important decisions we give thought to before making them. But what does it mean to be prudent in the Bible?

Be Careful of Who You Accept Counsel From – The Proverbs Series

counsel, advice, wisdom, righteous, wicked, God, God's Word

The thoughts of the righteous are just;
the counsel of the wicked is deceitful.

Proverbs 12:5

The “thoughts of the righteous” and the “counsel of the wicked” bring to my mind the image of a just and fair king who has a corrupt advisor. An example that immediately comes to my mind is from The Lord of the Rings trilogy. There is King Theoden of Rohan and his wicked, greedy advisor, Wormtongue. Wormtongue lied to the king and subtly influenced the king through his deceiful counsel when the king was making decisions. This wicked advisor wanted to undermine the king’s authority and take the kingdom for his true master, an evil and cruel leader.
